Classroom Economy

Description of the Activity:
Children created innovative recycled items, including bookmarks, greeting cards, and gift wrappers, using waste materials collected from households.

For the activity, children were divided into 6 groups. 3 groups played the role of sellers, selling recycled items and issuing mock currency notes to their peer groups on completing the tasks. The remaining three groups (buyer groups) were given five tasks to complete in the classroom through which they could also earn money. The money earned was further used to buy goods from the peer selling groups. For example, once a group completed all five tasks successfully, they could buy any 5 recycled items from the seller groups using mock currency.

Takeaway from the activity: Children became aware of the need for recycling materials while making useful products from them. They learnt about the spending money wisely while shopping and used their addition skills to pay the amount to the sellers. They learnt to work as a team and share ideas.
